So, Get This… We just watched a 20 year old show for the first time.

In November (2025), I got a text from Michaela while I was at work. She tells me that she decided to start watching Supernatural. I was like, yeah ok. She says, “You know… Jared Padalecki… Jensen Ackles?” I told her, “Yep. He was Eric Brady on Days of our Lives”… She wasn’t impressed with my useless trivia but I was. I could not only remember the guy, I could remember his character’s name. I think that is impressive. Still, I was like COOL. Awesome! Enjoy! Days later she was texts me again…”Hey, this show is pretty good. You should watch it with me.”

Now, I had seen a few episodes already back in 2016 when Rick Springfield did a guest stint on the show – I watched it totally out of context… even made a silly Facebook page cover image to commemorate it. Cuz, it was Rick Springfield and he and I are like THIS. 😏

So, the new year hit and I told Michaela to start the show over and we’ll start from the beginning. Weekends turned into binging and before we knew it, we had planned our road trip to Phoenix to attend Fan Fusion in June. Jared Padalecki was scheduled to attend and since he’s Michaela’s favorite and I am Super Mom, I decided to make her dream come true. Two weeks before the trip, Jared pulled out of the event. I admit that not only were we disappointed but I was kinda pissed. I get it. These things happen. It’s the risk you take and you shouldn’t base the whole event on meeting just ONE person. I took the day to be mad and then resolved to enjoy ourselves anyway. We were meeting other Supernatural cast and also Jamie Campbell Bower (Vecna, Stranger Things), it won’t all be for naught and we will have a blast.

Thoughts about Fan Fusion….

We attend FanX here in Salt Lake. Comparing the two, I would say that FanX is better – there’s just MORE… More celebrities in attendance…More photo ops… more autographs… better panels… at first I thought the food selection at Fan Fusion was better – they had a dedicated food space and seating which was a plus. But then we ate the food. 🤢 Not great. And the food truck options outside – all four of them 🙄 were the same options as inside. So, we decided that while FanX doesn’t have the greatest selection inside, the food trucks outside – of which there are a LOT – they provide they variety one would hope for. PLUS a large shopping mall is just a block or so away and if you get tired of the food at the expo center, you can always hoof it there for other stuff. So as an event, FanX wins. BUT…

FanFusion uses a different company for Photo Ops and it’s better. They have their act together. It was super organized and a lot less stressful to use. This same company is doing the ops at FanExpo Anaheim that we are attending despite our struggling bank accounts and lack of self-control because Jared Padalecki WILL be there and even though they advise against making events like these about one person – we are making this event about ONE PERSON. I promised the kid she’d get to meet him. So stay tuned…

Thoughts about Supernatural (the show)….

We finished the series a couple weeks ago. Michaela is already on her 4th (??) rewatch and I have suggested we start again to be ready for our first Supernatural Convention in January 2027 (see previous statement about our lack of self-control). Well, I loved the show. Michaela, obviously loved the show. There are reasons, of course why I didn’t watch it when it originally aired – 1) when it started, Michaela was a toddler. If we watched TV, it was Blues Clues or Dora the Explorer. 2) Then Mike’s addiction kinda just sucked all the energy I had for other things and I just couldn’t enjoy anything else at the time. 3) Then Michaela got older but then not old enough to truly be ready for this show… the timing wasn’t right. I think she needed to find it on her own. She became pretty attached to all the characters – often texting or calling me at work to tell me about something that happened. One time she even needed to come here to hang out because she was so distressed over one of the season finales. I mean, I get it. You invest time and get attached. For her it was different though, it seemed to connect with her in ways that other shows haven’t – I think a lot of it was about the family you choose and how the characters handled their grief and mental health.

For me? The show is so GenX coded, it’s not even funny – well, it IS funny, the show that is… From the music to some of the stories, I was predicting dialogue before it was spoken – especially anything spoken by Dean. I am pretty sure he is my spirit animal. I am the female Dean. I am sure I annoyed Michaela with my ability to guess things before they happened but oh, well!

One thing that I do NOT like is the fan fiction obsessed people who have taken the wholesome relationships from the show and turned them into something they clearly are NOT. I am fresh off a full watch of this series for the first time and I can unequivocally state that these ships do NOT exist. NONE of them do. They are made up – blurred between what fans have made up in their fan fiction, their heads and their kinks that distort reality. That may make people mad but I really don’t care. The show is fiction. The characters are fiction. NONE of it is real. And then to pin made up crap on top of it, is on another level of crazy. My experience with other fandoms confirms that this level of coo-coo is nothing new. They can believe what they want but engaging in fan wars, arguing with the actors who created these characters and making their lives hell, is something I don’t subscribe to. In other words:

Back to the show… did I cry? Not as much as Michaela did. The series finale DID make me cry, though. It was sad. And then it was funny. Cuz what the hell is this?

I know it was filmed during Covid, but c’mon… They did Sam dirty with this look. 😬

Final thoughts…

Michaela’s faves are Sam, Dean, Rowena and Jodie. My faves are Dean and Crowley with a shout out to Mark Pellegrino for making Lucifer so gross and funny that it almost scares me to say that I am a fan of that character. I adore Jodie and Donna – especially Donna for her positive attitude. I wish I was more like her but as I have already established, I am more like Dean… favorite expletive, included! We met Kim Rhodes this month, btw…. Michaela wants her to be her 2nd mom. 🤔 Not mad but maybe just a little envious? Like, they just met! 🤪

We meet Jared in 2 days. Michaela is freaking out. This is going to be fun.
