The One Where We Visited the Friends Experience
The Friends Experience was literally the first thing we did after arriving in New York City. We had taken the red eye and arrived around 6 in the morning. Naturally, we couldn’t check into our room and we needed somewhere to go while we waited to do that. Now, red eye flights aren’t for everyone. If you’re unable to sleep on a plane, then I am not sure jumping right into an all day activity is the right thing to do once you reach your destination. Thankfully, I can sleep almost anywhere so I managed to get some shut eye and so did Michaela (Just don’t rest your head on the tv screen on the seat in front of you. Those screens get hot. OUCH!). We arranged a ride from the airport to our hotel and dropped our bags off at the concierge. Pretty much anywhere you go in New York city you will be within a block or less of a subway station, which we were. We ventured down to the subway, purchased a week-long pass (this is the way to go if you want to get pretty much anywhere in Manhattan and beyond for cheap) and took the train to the Flat Iron District where the Friends Experience is located.
Note: The Friends Experience is not far from the Harry Potter Store. So we combined these two excursions into the same day and it worked out perfect! I’ll talk about the Harry Potter Store in a separate post!
Michaela and I are pop culture nerds. I introduced her to the show Friends a few years back after she was old enough to understand and appreciate it. It was a show that I adored back in the 90s and with good reason, the cast of Friends (also the characters) were my generation, slightly older but still super relatable. I never missed an episode back in the day. And since Michaela and I pretty much share the same brain when it comes to humor, I knew she would love it just as much as I. Getting to see actual props from the show and replica sets sounded like a lot of fun. But the experience is more than just photo ops, which by the way, are pretty great. You can take pictures with anything and of as many things as you like with your own phones or cameras but also they will take pictures at select spots for you that you can purchase as prints or digital downloads later. I recommend the digital download option. You only need to purchase one package and then you can share the digital photos with anyone in your group.
The photo ops are definitely one of the biggest perks of this attraction but there is a section of the tour that takes you into a museum with costumes and episode props that is a lot of fun to look at. TVs are situated throughout playing clips from some iconic scenes featuring either the costumes or props that you get to see in person.
Is it worth going? If you are a Friends fan, then YES. It’s a must. It is so much fun to cut loose and be sure to go with fellow Friends fans. I can see this kinda being a drag if you go with someone who doesn’t appreciate the show as much as you do. The pictures pretty much tell the story so be sure to check out the photo gallery at the link below. At the time of our visit, the digital photos were included with the price of our ticket. But it appears that now they are an an option that you can purchase and you can add it to your ticket when you purchase in advance via their website.
